As a monumental chronicle documenting the history of the nine reigns of the Northern Song Dynasty, Xu Zizhi Tongjian Changbian (續資治通鑑長編) compiled by Li Tao (李燾) stands as one of the most crucial and foundational historical sources for Song Dynasty studies. Its compilation represents a comprehensive aggregation of Northern Song literature preserved through the Jingkang (靖康) disaster and transmitted to the early Southern Song period, while its dissemination touches upon a series of critical bibliographical issues such as the abridgment and revision during the Southern Song, the compilation of Yongle Dadian (永樂大典) in the early Ming Dynasty, and the collection of scattered writings in Siku Quanshu (四庫全書) during the Qing Dynasty. Investigating the compilation and dissemination of Changbian holds substantial academic significance in both Song Dynasty history and historical bibliographical studies. In terms of compilation, this paper clarifies the key changes in the Changbian‘s compilation across its three stages concerning its chronological scope, naming, and content. It systematically establishes criteria for distinguishing between the Luzhou (瀘州) and Suining (遂寧) editions, determining that the Changbian Jishi Benmo (長編紀事本末) was based on the former edition, while the Dadian edition and the Song Dynasty abridged edition belong to the latter edition. It summarizes the overall framework and specific guidelines for the compilation of Changbian, pointing out that Changbian was directly compiled using imperial records as its base text, differing from the process of first compiling a preliminary index stage in Sima Guang(司馬光)‘s compilation of the Zizhi Tongjian (資治通鑑) long draft. Moreover, since primary sources were still available, Li Tao generally refrained from citing his own compiled works. Finally, it summarizes the sources and timelines of the literature Li Tao accessed, reconstructing the iterative layers of important cited sources in Changbian and the dynamic process of its compilation. Additionally, this paper supplements biographical materials on Li Tao‘s social interactions, as well as lost texts of Changbian, and verifies the dissemination and editions of certain Northern Song Dynasty literature. Regarding its transmission, this paper reveals the circumstances of the Changbian‘s continued compilation and revision in the Southern Song Dynasty, summarizes the abridgment characteristics of the surviving Song Dynasty abridged editions, and determines that the Song edition was reprinted from the Song Cuoyao (撮要) edition. It also outlines the overall transmission landscape of the Song and Yuan Dynasty lineages, pointing out the fact that after the ban on private histories during the Jiatai (嘉泰) era, there were few transmissions of Changbian during the reigns of Emperors Huizong and Qinzong, leading to their eventual loss. For the surviving Changbian editions from Ming and Qing Dynasties, this paper constructs an overall genealogical lineage and clarifies their significant textual issues. By revealing the Dadian‘s parallel compilation style of "duplication-avoidance" and the resulting textual feature of "loss in later sources, gain in earlier ones" in chronological histories, it explains the reason for supplementary content from other books in the Dadian edition. This paper also clarifies the cause and volumes arrangement of the hybrid abridged edition in the Siku edition, traces the version lineage of various editions descending from the Siku manuscript (四庫底本), and determines that the surviving Siku manuscript is the base text of the Southern Three Pavilions (南三閣) edition, while the movable-type edition does not originate from the Wenlan Pavilion (文瀾閣) edition but has another source. The research findings of this paper not only provide a solid version-based foundation for the collation and textual recovery of Changbian, but also vigorously advance research in the research fields such as Song Dynasty historical literature, Yongle Dadian and Siku Quanshu. The "End-Character Comparison Method" employed in large-scale comparision of duplicate copies, as well as the research strategy of adopting a holistic view of specialized works in this paper, can also offer methodological references and exemplars for the study of other historical documents.
