Trace emerging contaminants (ECs) and assimilable organic carbon (AOC) induced microbial regrowth are significant factors affecting the safety of drinking water quality. This work will focus on these risks, conducting a water quality investigation in drinking water treatment systems to quantitatively explore the safety risks associated with AOC and various ECs. A novel manganese-based catalyst coupled with ozone was developed for advanced drinking water treatment, and the mechanism of enhanced catalytic efficiency was elucidated through various characterization and computational methods. The removal effectiveness of AOC and ECs was limited in the investigated advanced drinking water treatment plants. The chlorination effect on the increasing AOC concentrations was the main factor contributing to the biological instability of finished water. According to the redundancy analysis (RDA), the composition of pathogenic bacteria was significantly affected by the variation of AOC concentrations (Er = 43.9%, p ≤ 0.01). Therefore, the biological instability risk induced by chlorination should be paid more attention and enhancing the removal of AOC precursors. As a conventional adsorption unit, biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration may possess the enrichment risk of ECs. The total content of ten detected ECs reached over 400 ng/g and a serious ECs leakage of BAC filters was found during the winter. According to the RDA and variation partitioning analysis (VPA) results, the enriched ECs significantly affected the bacterial community (Er = 59%) and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (Er = 33%) in BAC, necessitating focused attention.Manganese oxides coated ceramsites (Mn@CMs) coupled with ozone was employed for advanced treatment of drinking water. O3/Mn@CMs process exhibited certain elimination performance for AOC precursors (> 80%) and fluorescence components (> 50%). The saturability of DOM could be effectively improved during O3/Mn@CMs process, but less precursors reduced the interaction opportunities between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pollutant molecules. Therefore, the elimination performance of trace ECs was limited, wherein ciprofloxacin still maintained high ecological risk which need further treatment. To overcome the drawback of low catalytic and mass transfer efficiency, manganese-zinc bimetallic oxide (ZnMnO3) rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs) had been prepared for catalytic ozonation via co-deposition method. The abundant OVs could promote the exposure of hydrated hydroxyl groups at Zn sites and the adsorption of ozone molecules at Mn sites. Meanwhile, OVs could also be served as electron donors to activate O2 for H2O2 generation, enhancing ROS transformation. Therefore, ZnMnO3 exhibited excellent contaminant degradation capability (k = 0.117).ZnMnO3 loaded ceramic catalyst (MnZn@CMs) was successfully prepared using impregnation-co-deposition method for catalytic ozonation of drinking water. O3/Mn@CMs process showed outstanding removal efficiency for AOC precursors (> 90%) and fluorescent components (> 70%). ROS transfer had been enhanced by generated 1O2 and O2?-, along with in-situ produced H2O2., and thus O3/Mn@CMs process achieved efficient removal of trace ECs and commendable long-term stability.
