The end of a romantic relationship, commonly known as a breakup, often triggers a series of intense negative psychological reactions such as rumination, depression, anxiety, and insomnia, or emotions similar to grief. This range of negative emotional experiences is referred to as "breakup distress," which not only poses risks to mental health but also affects an individual's social functioning. This impact is particularly pronounced among college students in early adulthood. At this developmental stage, college students frequently engage in interpersonal explorations, including romantic relationships, and thus experience breakups more often. Due to their immature coping abilities and strategies, breakup distress can pose severe mental health risks for college students and significantly affect their future relationship patterns. This study aims to deeply investigate the measurement, key factors, and intervention strategies for "breakup distress" among Chinese college students in early adulthood. The goal is to provide more comprehensive insights into the field of mental health, to offer a scientific basis for designing more effective psychological interventions, and to improve the quality of mental health services for college students. This study also proposes innovative strategies to address the limitations and challenges of current psychological interventions. The study is divided into three parts:Study 1 revises the Chinese version of the Breakup Distress Scale and validates its precision and applicability among Chinese college students. The purpose of revising this scale is to provide a reliable measurement tool that distinguishes the degree of breakup distress from general emotional responses. This tool will serve as an important instrument for future psychological research and mental health practice in assessing and understanding breakup distress, and will provide a solid theoretical foundation for developing targeted psychological interventions. Study 2 explores the mechanisms by which individual emotion regulation strategies and romantic self-efficacy influence breakup distress, with a particular focus on the mediating role of romantic self-efficacy in this relationship. Study 3 adapts an empirically supported romantic relationship education program originally developed for university students abroad, localizing it to create a breakup intervention tailored for Chinese university students. The intervention aims to alleviate breakup distress and enhance psychological well-being.This study found that the Chinese version of the Breakup Distress Scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties in a sample of Chinese university students. Emotion regulation strategies were found to significantly affect the level of breakup distress, with romantic self-efficacy serving as a partial mediator in this relationship. The localized adaptation of the breakup coping workshop, as an intervention, was effective in alleviating breakup distress, enhancing emotion regulation strategies, improving romantic self-efficacy, and promoting psychological well-being among university students. The results of this study not only enrich the understanding of breakup distress in the field of mental health but also provide effective intervention measures to help college students better cope with the psychological challenges brought about by breakups. Through this research, we hope to offer practical support and strategies for college students experiencing breakup distress, thereby promoting their psychological recovery and personal growth.
