From the Five Dynasties to the Northern Song period, painting in China underwent a significant development and transformation. In this era, painting achieved remarkable progress not only in technique but also in conceptualization and style. Profoundly influenced by contemporary literature, philosophy, and the societal environment, the "literati painting" theory eventually crystallized during the Northern Song dynasty. By examining key figures and events of this period, one can gain deeper insight into the evolutionary process of literati painting and its stature in the annals of Chinese art history. This treatise explores the nascent forms of literati painting during the Southern Tang period and its evolution into the Northern Song era, culminating in a systematic exposition of the literati painting theory by Su Shi and his cohort of scholars.The aim of this study is to explore the journey of literati painting from its inception to maturity, paying special attention to historical contexts, policies, and individuals who significantly influenced the rise and development of literati painting, and how they propelled Su Shi and his group to formulate the literati painting theory.To address these queries, this paper employs historical research methods, literary analysis, and art historical approaches. Firstly, through historical research, the paper outlines the trajectory from the Southern Tang to the Northern Song, analyzing the political, economic, and cultural backdrops of the era to comprehend the origins and evolution of literati painting. Secondly, through literary analysis, the study delves into historical texts, painting critiques, and literati paintings of the Southern Tang and Northern Song periods, unveiling the historical inevitability of literati painting during the Song dynasty and its artistic features and aesthetic values. Lastly, employing art historical methodology, the paper deeply investigates the artistic thoughts and practices of several pivotal figures and their influence on the development of literati painting.The focus of this research is to reveal the genesis and evolution of literati painting and how artists and critics influenced its development. Through in-depth study, the paper concludes: the birth and growth of literati painting are intricately linked with the historical evolution from the Southern Tang to the Northern Song era, as artists of the time began integrating personal expression and natural contemplation into their artworks. Over time, this artistic trend spread nationwide and, under the collective influence of numerous artists and critics, ultimately led to Su Shi and his scholarly group‘s systematic formulation of the literati painting theory. This theory profoundly influenced the development of literati painting in later generations, becoming a priceless legacy in the history of ancient Chinese art.In summary, literati painting during the Five Dynasties to the Northern Song period represents not merely a maturity and richness in technique but, more importantly, an artistic spirit expressing the pursuit of transcendence from the mundane and the freedom of the spirit.
