This article, grounded in fieldwork from Jingxi City in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, investigates the types and evolution of the Zhuang ethnic stilted dwellings within the culturally diverse and multi-ethnic border regions. Addressing the cultural ambiguity, unique geography, and scarcity of research in the fringe areas of minority ethnic groups, the paper introduces a research methodology for rural houses that melds typology, history, and architecture, with the aim to address the diachronic challenges and developmental patterns in the evolution of rural houses. Through a critical examination of the unique ethnic historical periods of Jingxi and the developmental patterns associated with Zhuang stilted architecture, this study constructs a typological lineage of Jingxi‘s Zhuang stilted dwellings and highlights their evolutionary mechanism. The paper proposes a research approach that begins with "typology" and progresses to "evolution," essentially employing the characteristics of "type" to explore patterns of abstract order and logical sequences. "Evolution" elucidates the driving forces and mechanisms behind the changes of stilt houses over time, thereby revealing the interconnections in the evolutionary changes among various types of the Zhuang stilted dwellings in Jingxi. Hence, this study presents the developmental trajectory of the dynamic relationship between type and evolution through the survey of 51 villages and 350 stilted house samples, as well as detailed measurements of 4 natural villages and 75 typical houses as research vehicles. The paper interprets the samples through a typological hierarchy perspective, categorizing the architecture of Jingxi Zhuang stilted dwellings into 4 main types: original, transitional, mixed, and generic types, further divided into 12 subtypes, and discusses the characteristics of continuity and difference in space, structure, and style within each type. It introduces the composition, classification, and evolutionary patterns of the "forking-hand timber timber framework system," clarifying the synergistic mechanism between the large forking-hand timber timber and the enclosing structure. The main study of this paper on the Zhuang stilted dwellings in Jingxi delves into three levels: historical-cultural research, typology research, and evolution research, each deepening progressively. The first level, based on interdisciplinary theoretical methods in the study of vernacular architecture, supplements and organizes the entire cultural context and historical information rooted in the Jingxi Zhuang stilted dwellings. Extensive field surveys were conducted for emergency documentation and to complement the oral history of the houses, providing a reliable framework and foundation for the existing research on Jingxi Zhuang stilted dwellings, which is detailed in Chapter 2 of the paper. The second level constructs a diachronic research method based on typology, alongside creating a typological hierarchical framework for the Zhuang stilted dwellings in Jingxi. It explores the different characteristics of these houses in vertical, planar, and temporal dimensions through settlement types, compositional types, and architectural types. The paper conducts an in-depth study of the architectural types of stilted houses: original, transitional, mixed, and generic, covered in Chapters 3 and 4. The third level is based on a systematic architectural study of Zhuang stilted dwellings in Jingxi, elaborating on the evolution phenomena in space, structure, and style. It analyses the historical context of the development and evolution of stilted dwellings and reveals the particular architectural evolution mechanism of Jingxi Zhuang stilted dwellings rooted in the Zhuang ethnic history, which constitutes Chapters 5 through 7. Ultimately, by studying the transformation of Zhuang stilted dwellings in Jingxi, the paper summarizes several reflections on the development of marginal areas under a multicultural background, hoping to inspire contemporary efforts in preserving the vulnerable rural cultures at the periphery.
