A new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is profoundly altering the world structure and international order, and the technological competition is becoming the core of great power rivalry. China is intensifying its efforts to promote technological innovation, continuously producing world-leading technological achievements. Under the framework of the "Belt and Road Initiative," Chinese technologies, represented by high-speed rail, are being exported and cooperating with multiple countries, especially those in Southeast Asia. The geographical proximity of Southeast Asian countries to China has created a special geopolitical connection, while the United States, along with its allies, is intensifying the deployment of the Indo-Pacific strategy, enhancing the international influence of the Southeast Asian region. China high-speed rail has gradually become a crucial link in the interactions between China and Southeast Asian countries. Examining how Southeast Asian media report on China high-speed rail, a representative Chinese technology topic, and analyzing the characteristics and underlying motivations of these reports can provide valuable insights for shaping China’s national image. This research selects three representative mainstream Southeast Asian English-language media: Indonesia‘s "The Jakarta Post", Malaysia‘s "New Straits Times", and Thailand‘s "Bangkok Post". Building a self-constructed corpus and using Fairclough’s three-dimensional critical discourse analysis framework to analyze the above-mentioned media?reports. This research conducts textual analysis, discourse practice analysis, and social cultural practice analysis of the China high-speed rail coverage in these media. It also explores the portrayal of China’s national image through these reports. This research finds that these media outlets integrate China high-speed rail coverage into the national and regional development process, emphasize the citation of authoritative sources, and focus on political and economic issues while also considering social and technological issues. These characteristics are linked to the historical, political, economic, and social contexts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The research concludes that the China high-speed rail coverage in these media shapes China’s national image from four perspectives: an increasingly recognized technological image, a rigid stereotypical political image, a relatively positive economic image and a slightly negative corporate image. Based on these findings, this research attempts to propose strategic recommendations for promoting China high-speed rail and enhancing its communication in Southeast Asia.
