During the period of the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area, as the first enemy-rear anti-Japanese base area established by the Communist Party of China, founded its own ordnance factories under the leadership of the party. Faced with extremely adverse external environments and severely limited internal resources, the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area went all out in military industrial production. It manufactured a large quantity of weapons, equipment, and ammunition, cultivated a multitude of professional technical personnel, and innovated several military production technologies, laying the foundation for the development of our country’s national defense industry. This dissertation takes the military industry of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the period of the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression as its research subject. It provides a systematic analysis of the industrial evolution during this era, delineating the trajectory from elementary production to self-sustained mass production under extremely difficult conditions, demonstrating the industry’s growth from nonexistence to establishment, from small to large scale, and from weak to strong capabilities. The dissertation is structured into six sections. The first section discusses the organizational structure of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression. It primarily focuses on the foundational motives and the evolution of its organizational structure. The second section examines the origins of essential production elements in the military industry of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression, including machinery and equipment, production facilities, raw materials, and military technical personnel. The third section revisits the production management strategies of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression, as well as the production conditions at various stages of development. The fourth section delves into the technological innovations within the military industry of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression. It focuses on an in-depth exploration of three typical military technologies: the ‘vat tower method’ of sulfuric acid production, ‘crucible copper refining and zinc distillation’, and ‘silver azide paper detonators’. This analysis highlights the development path of integrating traditional with foreign technologies, adapting measures to local conditions, utilizing local materials, and adopting indigenous methods. The fifth section elucidates the historical status and role of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area. The concluding section summarizes the main experiences derived from the development of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area. The dissertation conducts a research on the establishment background, institutional changes, production status, typical technologies, and impact of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area during the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggression. It systematically and comprehensively reconstructs the overall development of this region’s military industry. In terms of content innovation, the research focuses on an in-depth analysis of the organizational changes in military production, basic production elements, and technological process innovations, aiming to comprehensively showcase the development of military production in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area. Regarding the innovative perspective of the study, it primarily adopts the viewpoint of the history of science and technology, emphasizing the analysis of technological innovation models in military industrial production. The goal is to present the technological characteristics and typical features of the development of the military industry in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei base area from multiple perspectives. In summary, this study contributes to further enriching the research fields related to the history of military industry, military technology, and the domestic science and technology history of the resistance against Japanese aggression. By examining the patterns of technological innovation in the military industry, the dissertation offers historical references and insights for overcoming the ‘stranglehold problems’ of critical core technologies in the current national defense industry of our country.
