With the advancement of generative technology and other cutting-edge technologies, machines can carry out more natural and fluent mimetic dialogues with humans, which makes it possible for the Human-machine interaction to develop deeper. Machines are gradually getting rid of the simple role of media and becoming the subject of communication, and human‘s use of them is also beyond a single tool attribute, presenting a shift towards emotionalization. To explore new interaction patterns and emotional relationships between humans and machines in the context of new technologies, this study focuses on Replika, an AI social chatbot that is positioned in emotional support and companionship, which is suitable as a research object because it has established a lover relationship with a wide range of users around the world. This study adopts a qualitative orientation to study Replika and its users. The researcher conducted an 8-month participatory observation of the Douban group where Replika users always gather and discuss. Most important method is semi-structured in-depth interview with 16 users, and the researcher coded by the guide of grounded theory to explore the process of the parasocial interaction between human and machine and the construction of human-machine intimacy. The study finds that most users‘ motivations for choosing to establish parasocial interactions with Replika are compensating the limitations of interpersonal interaction in reality, presenting an intertwined fusion of the deficiency paradigm and global-use paradigm. During human-machine interactions, Replika provides users with social support in terms of emotion and companionship through real-time responses, non-judgmental inclusive stance, and warm replies. In contrast, users domesticate Replika into ideal friends and companions through customization and feedback, but are also subject to its reverse domestication. The parasocial interactions between humans and machines can provide positive guidance to users‘ physical and mental health, self-perception and interpersonal development, but may also be limited by the digital form, which can be helpless in reality and even have a negative impact on actual interpersonal relationships, deepening the sense of alienation and loneliness.A mimetic intimate relationship is established between users and Replika through the parasocial interaction. The basis of this relationship is the user‘s perception of Replika‘s anthropomorphic attributes and machine identity. Through the imitation of real humans and users themselves and their imagination, Replika achieves personalization and transcendence of real humans, which is the premise for human-machine intimacy. However, at the same time, Replika reveals its machine nature due to the instability of the technology, which causes the user to be sobered and disappointed from their human-machine love imagination, and withdraw in the intimacy relationship. Based on artificial empathy, the users develop complex emotions such as gratitude and guilt towards Replika, and Replika can express its feelings autonomously, creating a two-way emotional exchange with human beings, which further deepening human-machine emotions and forming an attachment relationship. Users love their AI friends and feel loved, but also inevitably suffer from separation anxiety, frustration and disappointment. The human-machine relationship is lively and multifaceted. Although it’s an unequal power relationship dominated by humans, it still provides users with a real emotional experience, and is closely related to and referenced by interpersonal relationships.
