Foreign correspondents are not only the primary force in information production for overseas media organizations and a core component of the journalism and communication industry, but also the important representatives of unique narratives in international communication. This thesis focuses on the Chinese foreign correspondents’ group, conducting both quantitative measurements and qualitative analysis of their intercultural competence and professional identity, and elucidating the issue of cultural integration of foreign correspondents from the perspectives of acculturation and role theory. This study employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, utilizing questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews to explore the current status of intercultural competence and professional identity among Chinese foreign correspondents. In terms of quantitative research, this study developed an intercultural competence and professional identity assessment scale suitable for the foreign correspondent, established evaluation index systems for intercultural competence and professional identity using a comprehensive evaluation model, and used analytic hierarchy process to quantify the degree of individual‘s intercultural competence and professional identity, demonstrating a positive correlation between the two. Through the analysis and organization of data and interview materials, the study found that Chinese foreign correspondents, in terms of intercultural competence, demonstrate a common lack of attitude, relatively minor differences in knowledge and awareness, and individual differences in skills. Under the combined influence of cultural clash differences and individual characteristics in personality, communication skills, and professional techniques, individuals exhibit an embedded state between separation and integration in cultural adaptation. Regarding professional identity, Chinese foreign correspondents maintain a clear and independent objective identity in foreign cultures, conduct international communication tasks under the premise of adhering to Marxist journalism principles, exhibit relatively consistent organizational identity and values. However, influenced by regional differences and individual cognition, significant differences exist in self-efficacy among Chinese foreign correspondents, affecting the process of cultural adaptation and role perception of journalists. In the discussion of the influencing mechanisms of intercultural competence and professional identity of foreign correspondents, the study found mutual interactions between the two. Groups driven by identity towards competence enhancement tend to focus more on the practical application of intercultural competence, incline towards cultural separation in cultural adaptation, and exhibit a "profession-driven" cultural integration. Groups focused on capability to realize professional value emphasize their mission value and individual growth, incline towards cultural integration in cultural adaptation, and exhibit an "efficacy-oriented" cultural integration. The individual perception of foreign correspondents is affected by the combination of external environment and individual factors. The external environment includes international political, economic and cultural factors. Self-achievement, as the main individual factor, is the intermediate link between intercultural competence and professional identity. It is a subjective expression of self-perception of competence and a direct expression of one‘s professional role orientation. In the process of cultural adaptation, Chinese foreign correspondents continuously adjust their identity roles while embedding themselves, forming their role positioning as the objective and authentic professional practitioners, the bridge builders with mutual connections, and the social activists engaged in scrutiny and foresight.
