This study, titled "Public Space Design Based on Cultural Memory Theory: A Case Study of a Community in Tianqiao Area," aims to explore how to integrate cultural memory theories from the fields of history and sociology with environmental design within the context of interdisciplinary collaboration, and to apply these integrations to the practice of the graduation design. The thesis begins with a review of the historical and cultural evolution of the Tianqiao area, clarifying the urgent need for the renewal design of community public spaces in this area, and emphasizing the importance of excavating cultural memory and shaping spatial imagery for space design. Subsequently, the paper analyzes the key concepts of cultural memory theory and public space, interpreting the content related to the time, media, function, power, and construction dimensions of cultural memory theory, and discusses the concept development and constitutive elements of public spaces, as well as exploring the application of cultural elements in public space design through domestic and international design cases. The core of the design practice is to utilize the rich historical and cultural background of the Tianqiao area to create public spaces with profound cultural memories. These spaces are not only embodiments of physical structures but also repositories of residents' collective memories and imagination. Through field research, questionnaires, and user interviews in the Tiantan Nanli community of the Tianqiao area, the study knew the real situation of the community and the actual needs of residents. Based on research and field inspections, spatial intentions were refined, integrating unique cultural elements of the Tianqiao area, such as traditional performing arts, theaters, markets, and amusement, into community life to enrich residents' daily experiences and highlight regional cultural characteristics. During the practice process, the study not only emphasizes the importance of cultural memory in public space design but also its significance in shaping individual identity and collective memory, while enhancing the sense of identity and belonging of individuals and collectives to specific areas. Through design practice, strategies for applying cultural memory theory in public space design were summarized, including four dimensions: creating virtual and real spatial scenarios in the spatiotemporal dimension, completing the design translation of cultural symbols in the media dimension, meeting the flexible applicability of contemporary life in the functional dimension, and focusing on the organic integration of social functions and cultural memories in the social dimension. These strategies aim not only to enhance the regional characteristics and inherit cultural memories but also to refine and specify the intentions of spatial design. In summary, this study explores a new approach to combining cultural memory theory with public space design through the practice of community public space design in the Tianqiao area, providing a new perspective and direction for the design of public spaces. The findings and discussions of this study are expected to contribute new insights to the theory and practice of public space design and to open new paths for future design exploration.
