With the growth of the online game player community, more and more young women are entering the virtual environment shaped by online games. As a new medium, romantic video games change intimate relationships. This study explores the impact of romantic video games on young females’ romantic beliefs and intimate relationships, taking the theory of parasocial relationship as the foundation. A combination of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews was used to collect 397 valid samples and interview 10 female romantic video game players. A model containing variables such as game frequency, avatar identity, strength of parasocial relationship, flow, adult attachment and romantic beliefs was constructed to answer the question of how the romantic beliefs of female players of romantic video games are shaped and whether their real-life intimacy practices are affected as a result.Data analyses of questionnaires reveals that: (1) Players' games frequency can positively predict avatars identification of female protagonists; (2) Players' avatar identification of female protagonist can positively predict the strength of parasocial relationships with male characters and game flow; (3) Strength of parasocial relationships with male characters can positively predict game flow and players' acknowledgement of romantic beliefs; (4) Players' game flow can positively predict players' acknowledgement of romantic beliefs; (5) In terms of mediation effects: players' avatar identification of female characters mediated between game frequency and parasocial relationship, as well as between game frequency and flow. Second, parasocial relationship has a mediator effect between avatar identification and romantic beliefs, as well as avatar identification and flow. Meanwhile, the three variables of avatar identification, parasocial relationship, and flow played chain mediating roles in multiple pathways; (6) In terms of moderation effects: players' close dependence dimension of adult attachment has a significant negative moderating effect between parasocial relationship and flow. It indicates that the lower the player's level of close dependence in intimate relationships, the stronger the positive effect of parasocial relationship has on flow.Further interviews with the players reveal that young female romantic video game players’ willingness to step into intimate relationships and marry is generally low. For non-single players, their intimate relationship satisfaction is positive. Players’ preference for male protagonists in the game is basically consistent with the image of their ideal partners in reality single and non-single players generally recognized the differences between real intimate relationships and virtual world. As a result, singles develop relatively negative expectations of real-life males, whereas non-single players are relatively self-consistent and establish a system for evaluating intimacy that adapted to the real world. Players also utilize the game as a medium to build diverse relationships in real life. This study expands parasocial relationship theory, also contributes to the understanding of the dynamic process of female players' intimate relationship value construction, helps the online game industry to guide players to healthy intimate relationships, and brings new thoughts to the society on how to understand young women's emotional needs appropriately.
