In recent years, amidst China's growing international influence and the implementation of policies attracting overseas talent, there has been a surge in the number of overseas Chinese descendants returning to China for higher education, constituting a "reverse educational flow." However, scholarly investigations within communication studies on this cohort of new generation of ethnic Chinese, particularly regarding their role as pivotal bridges in international communication, remain limited. Given the uniqueness of this young Chinese diaspora and their importance in China's international communication endeavors, this study employs a mixed-methods research approach, combining interviews and questionnaire surveys, to examine from the perspective of social media affordances how they utilize and comprehend these platforms in China, and the interactive mechanisms through which this engagement influences their identity formation. Study 1, based on interviews and coding, delineates the concept of "vernacular social media affordances" for this group, encompassing three dimensions: platform functionalities and culture, identity exploration, and privacy concerns. Study 2, grounded in identity processing theory and analyzing data from 220 new generation of ethnic Chinese in Chinese universities, reveals that a rich array of platform features and a multicultural online environment facilitate clearer identity formation among these individuals. Conversely, online identity exploration behaviors may lead to identity confusion. Moreover, privacy concerns exert a negative impact on their identity construction on social media. Identity processing styles emerge as crucial mediating variables in the relationship between different dimensions of social media vernacular affordances and identity clarity. Importantly, identity resilience significantly moderates the effects of both informational and diffuse-avoidant identity processing styles on identity clarity, as well as the mediating effect of these styles on the relationship between identity exploration, privacy concerns, and identity clarity. This highlights that higher identity resilience can mitigate the detrimental impacts of avoidance strategies on identity clarity during periods of identity challenge, potentially converting them into positive forces for identity construction. Practically, the study suggests that technology companies should prioritize cultural diversity and privacy protection in platform design. For Chinese universities and the government, interventions targeting identity resilience can aid this young diaspora in navigating the identity challenges accompanying reverse educational migration, fostering their motivation to understand and disseminate information about China, thereby enhancing China's international communication prowess. Theoretically, this research enriches the understanding of affordance and identity studies within a specific context, offering a fresh viewpoint on the application of vernacular affordances in the realm of social media research. By devising a scale for popular social media affordances based on primary interview data, it clarifies the conceptualization and operationalization of affordances in the context of identity formation among this unique demographic, providing a valuable reference for future research. Furthermore, by integrating communication perspectives with the social media milieu and the distinctiveness of this group, this study advances interdisciplinary innovation in identity research.
