Japanese manga and anime have become very influential, especially the "shōnen manga" genre, which is recognized as classics, gaining popularity among audiences of all ages at home and abroad. Since popular culture is a reflection of social mentality and thought, as well as a major influence on the public, it is necessary to analyze it from a variety of perspectives. This thesis focuses on anime based on popular shōnen manga works from the 2000s onward. It is an attempt to analyze the heroines and other female characters from a gender perspective while clarifying issues hidden in their commonalities and characteristics. In different chapters, specific analyses mainly focus on three keywords: battle, self-reliance and social relations. In battle works, instead of heroines who used to be far from the battle, most heroines participate in battle in various ways. However, their ways of fighting are more likely to be dependent. Regarding self-reliance, focusing on the three heroines, it can be seen that they have achieved self-reliance in a certain degree, but most of them are finally back to the dependence on romantic relationships and male characters, indicating that a higher degree of self-reliance is still hampered. As for social relations, it can be seen that male domination, gender inequality and the persistence of heteronormativity are still prevalent among different works. In contrast to the father characters, the mother characters are usually confined to domestic space with fulfilling little social roles. Motherhood is emphasized while other aspects of their identities are clearly downplayed. In general, comparing to the past, the female image in anime works based on shōnen manga has been improved relatively, but it is still limited by gender order of the real world in many aspects.
