China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has experienced significant growth over the past few decades, making it one of the largest sources of FDI globally. However, the surge of Chinese investments worldwide has sparked concerns and anxiety in host countries, leading to challenges for Chinese companies investing abroad. This paper focuses on the public opinion environment for Chinese FDI in Canada, a country with significant economic ties to China. Through content analysis of news articles published in major Canadian newspapers and a case study analysis, this paper explores Canadian media’s attitudes towards Chinese investments and the factors contributing to negative public sentiment. The findings from the analysis of public opinion reveal that Canadian media coverage of Chinese investment in Canada predominantly centers around the energy sector and the metals and mining sector. The public opinion regarding the energy sector is generally positive, while the metals and mining sector, as well as the real estate sector, tend to generate negative sentiments. Articles related to the transport sector adopt a more neutral tone. In the health sector, there is an equal distribution of positive and neutral sentiments. The sentiment regarding the tourism sector is mixed, with an equal distribution of positive and negative perspectives.According to the analysis of Canadian media’s attitudes towards Chinese investments in Canada across various dimensions, the research finds that the sentiment towards Chinese investments differs among different sectors. Regarding investment motives, positive attitudes are observed in the energy, real estate, transport, and tourism sectors, while a neutral sentiment prevails in the metals and mining sector. The research also examines the attitudes towards FDI in Canada, specifically focusing on the energy and metals and mining sectors. The Canadian government’s stance on FDI has evolved over time, initially being positive but turning negative in 2022 due to concerns over national security and industrial development. The analysis further explores the impacts of these investments from political, economic, social, and environmental perspectives. Negative sentiments are prevalent in the metals and mining and real estate sectors politically, while the energy sector maintains a neutral sentiment. Economically, the sentiment is positive towards the energy and transport sectors, while negative towards the metals and mining and real estate sectors. Socially, negative sentiments are evident across the energy, metals and mining, and real estate sectors. Lastly, the environmental perspective reveals negative sentiments from the Canadian public across the energy, metals and mining, and tourism sectors. This paper also conducts a deep analysis of the metals and mining industry, which faces more severe public opinion challenges, and finds that the negative sentiment is mainly related to concerns about national security and economic dependency. The research highlights the need for Chinese investors to understand and manage public opinion in Canada and offers practical suggestions. By managing public opinion effectively, Chinese companies can enhance their investment strategies and mitigate negative attitudes towards foreign investment in Canada. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the public opinion environment in host countries and provides practical insights for Chinese investors seeking successful FDI ventures in Canada and beyond.
