This research focuses on the behaviors and impacts of watching cat short videos on Douyin. The relationship between people and pets has always been a concern of sociology, psychology and other disciplines. In recent years, the pet economy has been developing continuously, and the number of pet owners in China has been increasing year by year, which leads to the rapid development of pet-related research. With the rise and development of short videos, pets are also popular in the internet, especially the phenomenon of “Yunximao”. Cats turn into the internet and become cat memes which bring great effects to human beings. In sum, exploring the motivation of people watching short cat videos on Douyin and its influence from the perspective of communication science is also significant. This study relies on the classical theory of communication: Media Dependence Theory. First, a motivation model is constructed through a questionnaire survey. The results show that the convenience of Douyin, escapism, stress relief, and loneliness could predict the behavior of watching short cat videos on Douyin.Secondly, the research uses the content analysis method to study the comments of the two cat short videos in Douyin in 2021, and analyzes what people think and how they will interact when watching cat short videos from the dimensions of gender, comment type, emotional attitude, and friends interaction. The results show that the kinds of the videos would impact people’s comments, emotional attitudes, and interaction behavior with friends. Finally, this study answer the questions what kinds of effects cat short-videos bring to human beings through cognitive experiment and questionnaire survey. On one hand, the cognitive experiment show that watching short cat videos can arouse positive emotions in a short time; on the other hands, the watching behaviors can effectively predict Douyin dependence and animal rescue intention as long-term influence.
