Self-annotations are a type of literary genre that authors use to provide additional explanations and reference to their works. They are a secondary text in literary works, and there are not given much attention in the field of poetry. The Tang Dynasty is a period which self-annotations began to develop and perfect themselves, but there were few studies on the self-annotations of poetry in this period. The discussion on self-annotations on Tang poetry may be able to supplement and promote the overall research on Tang poetry. According to statistics, Bai Ju Yi is the poet who wrote the most self-annotations in the middle Tang Dynasty. His self-annotations are rich in content and contains a large amount of literature content, which is of high value in the study of history, addendums to poet’s poems, and culture of the Times. However, research on Bai’s self-annotations is always on the periphery and there is no in-depth discussion. Therefore, this research took the self-annotations of Bai Ju Yi’s Poems as the research object.Firstly, the study conducted a comprehensive statistical analysis of the self-annotations, and observed the content and distribution of the self-annotations from a macro perspective that has not been paid attention to before. The self-annotations content is divided into three categories: (1) background annotations, (2) style annotations, and (3) phonetic annotations. From the distribution of self-annotations, the study found that Bai has his own effects on different poetic styles, different poetic contents and different positions. Secondly, based on the editions of Bai’s Poetry works by Xie Si Wei, referring to Zhu Jin Cheng’s Bai Ju Yi’s Poetry Collection, and comparing the Kanazawa version and Nabo version, the research identified doubts about the existing self-annotations of Bai’s poetry, and complemented the shortcoming of previous studies. In Kanazawa version’s and Nabo version’s self-annotations studies, these two versions showed different contents preservation tendencies, which expands the research direction of poetry’s self-annotations to a certain extent. Finally, this study discovered that self-annotations were closely related to Bai’s creative process. From three aspects of (1) literary dissemination and acceptance, (2) poetic concept, and (3) creative philosophy, this study deeply explored the role of self-annotations in Bai’s works.Overall, the study found that Bai’s self-annotations are not a random production, but rather a result of careful consideration and writing during the repeated process of creation and complication. They reflect Bal’s original intention in creating the poems.
