The relationship between Confucianism and Buddhism in the Northern Song is one of the issues that has attracted much attention in the scholarly world, as the two have driven their own evolution while at the same time colliding with each other. As a representative figure of Confucianism in the Northern Song, Ouyang Xiu was a strong advocate of the exclusion of Buddhism and a critic of it, but on the other hand he was inextricably linked to it, which makes his relationship with Buddhism slightly complicated. In the face of the decline of Confucianism and the rise of Buddhism, Ouyang Xiu took upon himself the task of reviving Confucianism and, on the basis of the experience of his predecessors, tried to find a way to overcome Buddhism through Confucianism, a path that was taken up and played out by later generations, thus demonstrating the importance of his thinking on the prevention of Buddhism. The focus of the analysis of Ouyang Xiu‘s thought on the prevention of Buddhism cannot be limited to a discussion of how Ouyang Xiu prevented Buddhism, but also what the significance of his thought on the prevention of Buddhism was. Therefore, this paper attempts to discuss Ouyang Xiu‘s thought on the repudiation of Buddhism, using his poetry and writings as the main documents for the study, following the ideas of how he viewed Buddhism, why he rejected Buddhism, what his specific criticisms of Buddhism were, and what the significance of his criticisms of Buddhism were. It then goes on to summarize the salient features and limitations of Ouyang Xiu‘s thought on the prevention of Buddhism and discusses the significance of his thought on the prevention of Buddhism.Ouyang Xiu had a clear and conscious Confucian stance, and as his political ideal was the rule of the three kings, he rejected Buddhism and regarded it as a great danger to the world and an evil doctrine. However, Ouyang Xiu was able to look at Buddhism rationally, he was not averse to interacting with monks, and he had a certain understanding of Buddhism. And his rational attitude made him realize that it was necessary to analyze the development of Buddhism and the reasons for its prosperity. It was on the basis of this analysis that he explored a different critical approach to Buddhism. In other words, Ouyang Xiu did not advocate a fierce confrontation with Buddhism, but rather strengthened himself to resist heresy, and this roundabout approach was also respected by later Confucians, who further enriched and developed Confucianism by fully exploiting its intellectual resources and making it new again. Although Ouyang Xiu‘s thought on the prevention of Buddhism still had certain limitations, and the profundity of his thought was heavily criticized by later Confucians, we still need to see the uniqueness of his thought and the role it played in the formation and development of the new form of Confucianism.
