As rural revitalization continues to deepen and the relationship between urban and rural areas becomes increasingly close, many rural areas are gradually uncovering the value of their idle resources. Abandoned rural primary schools, as an important part of rural idle resources, have great potential for transformation and utilization. However, existing studies on reuse of rural idle buildings cannot fully cover the current needs of rural development. From the perspective of functional replacement, existing research has focused mainly on transforming such idle resources into village public service facilities, with relatively less exploration of reuse strategies that combine urban-rural interactions and tourism development. From the perspective of design transformation, research on design strategies that combine traditional rural architecture culture is still blank. Therefore, this paper takes the transformation of abandoned rural primary schools as the research content, attempting to explore suitable ways to transform them into building types that meet today‘s rural development needs, and to explore design strategies that combine traditional building cultural transformation and modern architecture. This study aims to provide design references for subsequent abandoned rural primary school transformation design.Based on the above objectives, this paper summarizes the relevant cases of domestic reuse of abandoned rural primary schools in recent years, and extracts design strategies that can be borrowed from the perspectives of site environment response, building volume operation, coordination of new and existing elements, and indoor-outdoor space transformation. It tries to generalize the architectural design responses under different existing conditions and site environments. Analyzing the traditional architectural culture and geographical characteristics of Daishatan Village, and combining the transformation design of Daishatan Primary School, this study explores a suitable technical route and new spatial form that will combine traditional and modern architectural concepts. This paper comprehensively summarizes the transformation and design cases of China‘s abandoned rural primary schools, providing references and design strategies for rural architecture transformation design practice under different existing conditions. It analyzes the spatial characteristics of traditional rural dwellings and village construction environments in Daishatan Village, and combines them with the transformation design of Daishatan Primary School, exploring modern architectural design techniques that can integrate the aforementioned spatial characteristics. It is hoped that the transformation design of Daishatan Primary School will provide reference value for the design and creation of similar rural architecture in the future.
