Since the time of Ancient Rome, the yearning for the ancient Chinese civilization spread along the Silk Road in Europe, and the publication of The Travels of Marco Polo in the 13th century set off a frenzy of infatuated with China in the world. During the reign of Louis XIV, there was a real “China fever” in France, which is now called “Sinomania”, and all the princes and aristocrats were proud of owing Chinese artworks. This exhibition proposal aims to curate an exhibition on the role of luxury goods merchants in the dissemination of “Chinese style” in France. Firstly, through documentary research, physical research, the historical research results of “Chinese style” in France in the 17th and 18th centuries are sorted out, and then through many fields such as painting, artwork, interior decoration and garden, to show how the Chinese style forms a fanatical trend in the upper class of France through the hands of luxury merchants. While the past of “Chinoiserie” in France is gradually being unveiled, the catalytic role of the middleman, the luxury merchants, is not well understood and research about this middleman is still in its infancy. We trend to pay attention to the achievements of civilization transmission, but may ignore some of the interesting points of the whole process. Therefore, in view of its importance and the necessity of research, this proposal will take luxury merchants as the center, and then combine the exhibition resources such as architectural objects, tool objects, scene restoration and interactive games to expand the history of the integration of the two civilizations from this perspective. The exhibition proposal also draws on museological and curatorial theories, combined with theoretical tools such as art management and marketing, and also refers to the exhibition venue, namely the historical exhibition files of the Palace Museum, in an attempt to make a breakthrough in the exhibition format , perfect integration of the theme and the exhibition venue, and bring a better viewing experience to the audience.
