Shanghai, honored as “the key to modern China”, witnesses the collision of Western and Eastern culture, and is an important representative of China’s modernization. Interior design is highly relevant to people’s life. Residential interior design in particular, embodies the overall material and spiritual needs of the people. In the Republic of China era(1912-1949), the economy and culture of Shanghai enter into a period of rapid development, with a expanding population, higher degree of urbanization, and an increasing amount of residential buildings. Shanghai’s residential buildings and their interior designs, represented by concessions, are one part of the modernization of Chinese cities, and accelerate the modern transformation. This essay systematically sorts out various periodicals and documents published issued in Shanghai in the Republic of China era, and puts the residential interior design that was then undergoing modern transformation into the macro socio-economic and cultural background; focuses on the residential problems brought by high-level urbanization and a dense population, concession planning and construction, regulations issued to standardize the construction of buildings as well as two important architectural academic groups founded in the 1920s and 1930s --- Chinese Institute of Architects and Shanghai Architectural Association. This essay also discusses three kinds of different residences, i.e. lanes and alleys, apartments and gardens, and analyzes the spatial layout and design cases of their interior design through case studies.Color is the keynote of residential interior design and the premise of setting off the overall atmosphere of residential interior. In the early 20th century, Western color science theory was introduced to Shanghai in the Republic of China era. This essay focuses on the research, discussion and dissemination of interior color conducted by Shanghai designers and scholars in that era. The interior furnishings in the period of the Republic of China era is paid little attention to by the academic circles at present, but it remains as an important means to decorate the residential interior and an embodiment of residents' taste and preference. This essay uses methods such as case study, comparative study, iconography and etc. to analyze the furniture, window decoration, flowers and plants, wall decoration and other common interior furnishings of Shanghai residence in the period of the Republic of China era.The traditional thoughts of Chinese society advocates that male should dominate outside the house and women dominate domestically. With the improvement of women's education, the rise of women's liberation movement, and the introduction of Western Home Economics, the journals of the Republic of China era actively advocated the participation of women in the practice of residential interior furnishings, and there were cases of urban women's participation in Shanghai's residential interior design. The essay focuses on this social phenomenon, sorts out relevant journals, documents, figures and cases, and proceed in special analyses and researches. All in all, this essay sorts out the challenges confronted by Shanghai residential interior design in the Republic of China era in the period the modern transformation; summarize the practices and theoretical explorations in this field under the background of collision and integration of Eastern and Western culture; analyze the rich humanities connotation and the characteristics of the times of Shanghai residential interior design in the period of the Republic of China era on the premises of satisfying the residential needs of the people.
