The use of window paper in traditional Chinese architecture has experienced a long history as a light transmissive material, and it was not replaced by glass until modern times. After the Venice Charter and Nara Declaration clearly defined "authenticity" as an important part of the protection of traditional buildings, "lighting authenticity" has gradually attracted scholars' attention. Since window paper makes up a significant part of "lighting authenticity", this paper focuses on the study of its usage in Chinese traditional architecture. However, in the existing practice of traditional architecture protection, little attention is paid to the protection of its lighting features; in the existing research on window paper, there is also a lack of quantitative analysis combining architectural space. Therefore, by combining historical research and quantitative experiments, this paper designed a series of experiments on the study of window paper from physical measurement, space performance measurement, and computer simulation, aiming to reveal the optical properties of window paper as a uniform diffuse transmissive material and sum up an effective simulation method to promote the research of other Chinese traditional buildings through validation experiments. At the end of the paper, 2 typical Beijing Siheyuan courtyards were used to study the effect of window paper on the indoor lighting of traditional buildings, in order to verify the applicability of the simulation method, and to explore the specific impact of window paper on the daylighting of traditional buildings.
