The development of digitalization, networking, and intelligence has greatly affected the newspapers. On the one hand, with the rise of new media and “new new media”, the newspapers face survival crisis. On the other hand, the introduction of new technologies provides the newspapers with opportunies. In this context, The New York Times has made itself as “digital first” and started its digital reform towards media convergence. It is turning to be “omnimedia”, “convergent media”, “intelligent media”, and “immersive media”.The thesis focuses on the transformation of The New York Times’ content production. By applying case study and in-depth interview, the thesis illustrates the changes of The New York Times’ content production in the context of media convergence. The changes include the involved fields, ways of presenting, and ways of reaching the audience. The thesis uses media ecology theory and gatekeeping theory to analyze three kinds of transformation in the content production of The New York Times. The first one is the transformation of content, in which media are changing from “news providers” to “knowledge producers”. The second one is the transformation of storytelling, in which readers are changing from “passive receivers” to “active experiencers”. The third one is the transformation of media roles, in which the newspapers are changing from “gatekeepers” to “technicians”, “curators”, and “guides”.Based on different media systems and different contexts of media convergence in the U.S. and China, as well as the particularity of The New York Times in the U.S.’ newspapers, the thesis also summarizes the lessons of The New York Times and offers some suggestions to Chinese newspapers.
