The purpose of this thesis is to revitalize part of the Ciqikou Historical District inShapingba, Chongqing. Since 1998, when the city became a municipality, the governmentplaced an enormous amount of time and effort to renovate Ciqikou as it remains the onlysurviving old town in Chongqing. Tourists have since flocked this touristic destination to takestroll down its main street and try the local delicacies and cuisine. Over the last fifteen yearsof renovation, the buildings along the main street have been slowly and steadily revitalizedand occupied; however, less than 50% of the land of the historical district is fully occupiedand giving either commercial or residential value, as the majority of buildings not directlyvisible or connected to the main street have been ignored in the grand scheme of thisrenovation. Because of the poor conditions that these areas make for living, many old localshave long disappeared. It is therefore imperative to find solutions to reverse this trend andrevitalize the ‘history’ in Ciqikou by bringing old residents back and giving them a decentplace to stay within the old district. This thesis will result in a comprehensive design of a setof buildings in the most historical part of Ciqikou, with the objective of improving the overallcultural, experiential, and economical value of place.
