The present study looks into the social identity of the consumer groups of Lolita Fashion, a fashion style of subculture which derives in Japan. After it spreads to China, local customers voluntarily came into a subculture consumer group of female youth and their activities center around a virtual community. With an approach of virtual ethnography, the present study on the one hand conducts long-period observation of the virtual community as well as the group members’ offline gatherings and collects rich primary data. On the other hand, the study includes 35 semi-structured interviews of the members in this group. Based on the empirical research, the study aims to address three specific questions. First, how is the Lolita Fashion constructed? Second, why consumers accept this clothing style? Last but not least, whether is there a shared identity among the group members, how does this identity come into being and in what way does it manifest itself? It is found that Lolita Fashion is constructed by joint forces from the merchants and popular media and caters for the demands of middle-class young females. This consumer group creates a symbolic image through Lolita Fashion. Through their symbolic consumption and group contacts, a group identity of Lolita is formed and positive social identification is constructed. Therefore, each group member can obtain a sense of belonging and security. The social identity not only changes the group members’ patterns of consumption and codes of behavior, but also promotes shared emotion and values. These shared values and codes are further accepted and maintained by each member in a tacit way, and sit at the heart of the consumer group, based on which an ordered organization is able to establish. The group members always take Lolita Fashion as a means of enhancing femininity. Their longing for a classic noble lifestyle and their needs to stay young also can be regarded as an escape from realistic social pressure.
