Although Huang Zunxian (1848-1905) has left a lasting name among his countrymen as the best poet in the movement of Poetry Revolution in Late Qing, he would probably have preferred to remain famous as a successful diplomat and political reformer. Appointed as Counselor to the Imperial Qing Legation to Tokyo in 1877, Huang was the first Chinese who tried earnestly to comprehend and narrate the changes and reforms taking place in Japan. Departed from previous studies that locate Huang in the history or literary history of modern China, this dissertation underscores the fact that Huang’s writings centered on Japan was born within the broad Sinograph Community. In despite of his short-lived sojourn in Japan for only five years, Huang kept a life-long interest in revising the Japan-related texts. These texts not only stand for the achievement of his literary of historical writings, but also embody his political pursuit. If we regard his Japan-centered poems, Riben guozhi (Treaties of Japan), gift poems and brush talk with Japanese literati and diplomatic texts as the broad practice of Chinese writings, it becomes evident that his writing practice overlapped the transformation of the Sinograph Community. The position of Chinese writing in Japan had undergone a subtle change as the result of Japan’s acceptance of Western knowledge and the surge of Japanese nationalism in the 18th century. Indeed, the Sinograph Community was under reconstruction.Huang’s writing practice is defined by a form of intertextuality which includes the Chinese writing texts of Japanese, the poltical conflicts in Asia as well as the historical transformation of the regional structure. By locating Huang Zunxian’s works back to their original context and historical environment, this dissertation aims to explore complexity deployed among dicourses of power, ideology, and language that were centered on the Chinese writing. I argue that the complexity and the delicacy of his writings centered on Japan can be sufficiently evaluated, only when they are read against the historical background of the reconstruction of this broad Sinograph Community, and all the contextual and political intertexualities involved are unveiled.
