As the representative work of Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac is considered a classic of environmental literature and has been revered as a holy book in conservation circles, especially for Leopold’s conservation ideas, the land ethic. However, many criticisms are leveled against the philosophical justifiability of the land ethic. This thesis intends to study the land ethic theme of the work from a narrative perspective, which integrates the narration with the almanac stories and landscape sketches, to display how a narrative is constructed to elaborate and justify the land ethic. In this thesis, an introduction of environmental literature and narrative’s place in Ecocritical field comes before the analysis of A Sand County Almanac as a clue. In analyzing the work itself, the narrative of almanac stories and that of landscape sketches are studied respectively and then the thematic unity of the work is examined in accordance with it. And it is to find out that whether the narrative reading of the book helps to understand the land ethic and could temper those criticisms which leveled against it to some extent. Therefore, it will hopefully contribute to the future study of this work so far as land ethic keeps on inspiring us in addressing man-nature relationship.
