Zheng Xuan’s Studies of Li is a significant issue in terms of the academic idea of Western and Eastern Han Dynasties’ Classical Studies. To look at Western and Eastern Han Dynasties’ academic condition from the point of view of Historicism, one would realize the intention of Zheng Xuan’s Studies of Li is in fact a kind of reflection of the Dynasties’ academic condition; the general and specific connection between the two are subtilly embodied in it. To deeply comprehend Zheng Xuan’s annotation on Zhou Li, Yi Li and Li Ji and to deal with the divergence of argumentations upon Classics, one would realize that Zheng Xuan goes for Zhou Li and treats it as the criterion; this is something different from the academic condition of the time. Zheng Xuan takes the text of Zhou Li as basis to debate and rebut the argumentations upon Classics, to compromise and reconcile the set of etiquette in Zhou Li, Yi Li and Li Ji and to construct a Utopia that is based on Zhou Li as the blueprint; also, to embody the academic idea of the time, which is the transformation of Confucian set of etiquette in it. In short, Zheng Xuan’s Studies of Li is endowed with mission of the academia of the time; also, it is an ideal of Zheng Xuan’s own academic research. As a national ideology, Classical Studies is in no doubt manipulated by rulers in one aspect; nevertheless, it is also the basis of the spiritual tradition of idealism of Chinese literati’s in the ancient time. Zheng Xuan’s Studies of Li could be seen as one of the examples. To know and to comprehend the connection between Classical Studies and the era in depth could benefit the academic research in the History of Classical Studies, History of Academic Research and History of Idea; also, it could provide the real world with beneficial resources of spirits and thoughts and could also be a contribution of Chinese academic and thoughts to man’s wisdom.
