“The Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection” has received extensive attention and positive comments since its outcome. The Approach has defined translation as “the selection activity of the translator’s adaptation to fit the translational eco-environment”, which stresses that the process of translation is that of the translator’s adaptation and selection in the translational eco-environment and puts forth the viewpoint of “translator centeredness”. As the macro theory on translation studies, “Translation as Adaptation and Selection” can definitely be applied to both written translation and oral interpretation. However, “Translation as Adaptation and Selection” which has taken the general translation studies as the research object has not made elaborated and systemic research on interpreting. The boom of world economy and the rapid development of globalization have prospered the communication and cooperation among different countries and regions, which hence spells the flourishing of interpreting market as well as the popularity of interpreting studies. Adopting “Translation as Adaptation and Selection” as theoretical framework, the thesis aims to study the eco-environment of interpreting and the interpreter’s multi-dimensional adaptation and selection in the interpreting eco-environment from the perspective of “adaptation and selection”. The study first illustrates what is interpreting eco-environment, which mainly contains source discourse, source language and target language, speaker, audience, client, setting as well as the communicative, cultural and social factors, etc. All these elements should be carefully considered prior to and during the interpretation since they will, to some extent, affect the interpreter’s selective adaptation and adaptive selection in the interpreting eco-environment. Based on this knowledge, the research places emphasis on the exemplification of the interpreter’s adaptation and selection in the interpreting eco-environment, specifically, how the interpreter adapts and selects from the linguistic, communicative and cultural dimensions, etc.The research results verify that all the elements are supposed to be carefully considered in the interpreting eco-environment, ignorance of any one of which will influence the interpreter’s performance more or less; the three dimensions in the Approach can function as guidance for the interpreter’s adaptation and selection in the interpreting eco-environment; owing to the complicatedness and particularity of interpreting per se, except adapting and selecting from the three dimensions, the interpreter needs to adapt and select from other dimensions like making advance preparations prior to interpreting and flexibly handling the unexpected issues during the interpretation, etc. Finally, the author concludes that it is a new attempt to apply “Translation as Adaptation and Selection” to interpreting studies, and that “Translation as Adaptation and Selection” could explain the interpreting phenomena. It is worth further exploring the interpreter’s adaptation and selection in the interpreting eco-environment from the new dimension.
