弄清欧美人士对于晚清思潮的影响,对“中西文化交流与中国近代化”的问题研究意义重大。本文深入讨论了甲午战后英国传教士李提摩太与张之洞卓有成效的三次会面;探悉了李提摩太怎样通过《万国公报》宣传维新,进而与张之洞一起推动了中国维新报业的发展;研究了李提摩太赠书《人类的教育》及《教化阶梯衍义》对张之洞《劝学篇》及中国近代教育改革的意义。张之洞自任山西巡抚开始,西学态度有所转变。在此期间,张之洞邀请李提摩太为官员讲授西学。甲午后时势突变,李提摩太三次面见张之洞,联交抵日、议和改革、献计献策。在李提摩太所交接的中国大员中,张之洞是最有成效的之一,也是积极付诸实践的一个。张之洞吸纳了李提摩太的方案,为挽时局做出种种努力,迈出西学维新第一步。甲午后维新气息在中国蔓延开来,李提摩太主持的《万国公报》功不可没。《万国公报》创华报之先锋,昌中西之新事,开通风气、宣扬西学,刊载了大量维新人想说而又不敢说的话,做了维新人欲做而又不敢做的事。受其激发,张之洞积极促成维新宣传阵营——“上海强学会”、《时务报》,推动中国维新报业的发展。1896年李提摩太赠予张之洞西方世界新旧教之争力作《人类的教育》,启发了张之洞《劝学篇》教育维新的方向。作为维新运动的纲领性文献,《劝学篇》是时代的声音,触及了关键的话题,成为19世纪末这场中西文化之争的顶点之作。《人类的教育》的姊妹篇《教化阶梯衍义》是维新时期《万国公报》上刊行的为数极少的一篇西方教育史文章。在众多关键问题上《劝学篇》与其有相似论述,特别是小学、中学、大学的西方近代教育模式,体现了近代化、维新的意义。
Understanding European-American figure’s impact on the Chinese social thought in late Qing dynasty is significant to the study of “sino-west cultural exchange and Chinese modernization”. This paper discusses the three fruitful meetings between Timothy Richard and Zhang Zhidong after Sino-Japan War; discusses how Timothy propagandize reform by WAN KWOH KUN PAO, and impulse the development of newspapers in reference to the reform with Zhang Zhidong, discusses the significance of Timothy’s donating the Education of the Human Race and Jiao Hua Jie Ti Yan Yi to Zhang Zhidong’s Quan Xue Pian and Chinese modern education reform.Zhang Zhidong began to change his attitude of western learning, when he was viceroy of Shanxi Province. During that time, Zhang invited Timothy to give lectures to officials. After Sino-Japan War, Timothy met Zhang three times, and he offered advice on fighting back against Japan relying on allies and reform. Their intercourse was one of most successful. Zhang absorbed Timothy’s emergency treatment plan, paid efforts to save the dangerous situation, and began his first step in reform.After Sino-Japan War, the reform enthusiasm sprang in China, WAN KWOH KUN PAO managed by Timothy played an important role. It originated newspapers in China, publicized news, and propagandized western learning. They say what reformers couldn’t say, and do what reformers couldn’t do. Zhang supported the establishment of Qiang Xue Hui and Shi Wu Bao, boosted the development of newspapers in referring to reforms.Timothy donated Zhang the paper Education of the Human Race in 1896, which was the culmination of a theological controversy in western country. It led Zhang’s direction of reform. Quan Xue Pian was the voice of times. It was the culmination among the Sino-West cultural controversy during late 19 century. Jiao Hua Jie Ti Yan Yi, was the rare paper on western education history in WAN KWOH KUN PAO, during reform period., On many issues, there are similar ideas in Quan Xue Pian and Jiao Hua Jie Ti Yan Yi, especially the modern education pattern: elementary school, middle school and college, which embody the significance of modernization and reform.
